Grundfos History

From Foss 1 to Global Pump Leader

The story of Grundfos is not just about pumps. It is about innovation, problem-solving, and long-term engineering thinking that started in the 1940s.

The First Pump: Foss 1 (1946)

The first pump developed by Poul Due Jensen was called Foss 1.

Key Facts:

  • Developed in 1946
  • A piston pump for shallow groundwater
  • Designed for wells up to 7 meters deep
  • Double-action mechanism pumping water in both directions
  • Only 26 units were produced

It was nicknamed “the pig” due to its shape.

This pump marked the true beginning of Grundfos as a pump manufacturer.

The Real Beginning (1944–1945)

1944

Poul Due Jensen founded a small company in Denmark called:
Bjerringbro Pressestøberi og Maskinfabrik

1945

A farmer needed a water system, but no suitable electric pump was available.

So he built one.

What Made Grundfos Different

Problem-Driven Innovation

It started with solving a real problem, not launching a product.

Engineering Quality

From Foss 1 onwards, quality was the main focus.

Early Global Vision

Export started just a few years after founding.

Continuous Innovation

Grundfos consistently invested in improving efficiency and performance.

Grundfos Today

Today, Grundfos is:

  • One of the world’s largest pump manufacturers
  • Operating in over 60 countries
  • Producing millions of pumps annually
  • Leading in energy-efficient and smart pump solutions

Conclusion

The journey of Grundfos began with a simple idea:

👉 Build a better pump when none existed.

From the Foss 1 piston pump in 1946 to advanced smart systems today, Grundfos has stayed true to that principle.

This is why it remains a benchmark for quality, efficiency, and reliability in the global pump industry.
